De Klep is named after the ‘beer tankard with a lid (klep)’ from which the people of Venlo drank their beer in earlier times. If you wanted a glass of beer, you ordered a ‘Klep’. The landlord would then fill a klep with beer. Usually Altbier. In Venlo a ‘klep’ became synonymous with ‘a glass of beer’, long after the lid itself had disappeared. Because of this, the verb kleppen means drinking in Venlo, and when people say of someone “Dae klep” (that one kleps), they mean that this person is an alcoholic. The verb kleppen is the only word in the Venlo dialect that also has its origin in Venlo.

In Dutch, kleppen also means chatting, and we want to offer room for that too. Here the music stays in the background. A good glass of beer goes with a good conversation.
